Portugal head into their final game of the group stages of the Confederations Cup and I am backing them to win the game, and qualify for the semi-final stage. They face bottom team New Zealand, who are already out of the tournament and go into the game as strong favourites for success.
The tournament has been good for Portugal so far, although I am sure they are capable of playing much better. In their opening game, they drew 2-2 with Mexico, a disappointing result after they allowed an injury time equaliser.
However, the point wasn’t too bad against a good team and they backed it up with a 1-0 win against Russia. They weren’t at their best that day, but an early goal from Cristiano Ronaldo gave them a lead they held on to.
New Zealand have struggled in the tournament, in what was a very tough group for them. The Kiwi’s lost 2-0 to hosts Russia in their opening game, before playing better against Mexico, but still losing out 2-1.
They were much better in their second game and took the lead, but they were unable to hold onto anything. They have nothing to play for here other than pride, so I expect them to have a go at Portugal, although that may play right into the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates.
Portugal look on course for the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup and it will be a big disappointment if they don’t make it.
I am backing them to win their final game against New Zealand and booking their place in the semi-finals, where they would have a great chance of making the final. The final games of Group A are on Saturday and there is a lot to play for.
