While mathematically Real Madrid can’t win the La Liga title this season, mentally they can by beating Barcelona, their only remaining title rival. Madrid currently have a three-point lead and a game in hand over their fierce rival, if that stretches to six points and a game in hand then there is surely no way back for Barcelona this season.
Madrid head into the game in better form domestically and they are unbeaten in their last nine games. Barcelona have lost two of their last six games, giving the advantage to Madrid at a crucial point of the season.
On top of that Barcelona have just been knocked out of the Champions League, losing 3-0 on aggregate and being held scoreless on two occasions by a very efficient Juventus side. Real Madrid qualified for the next round with a 6-3 aggregate victory over Bayern Munich and they are now strong favourites for both the league title and the Champions League title potentially giving them a memorable double.
One thing you should expect in this game is goals. Both clubs like to play attacking football and both will be desperate for the three points in what is a huge game. That should give us an attacking game and plenty of goals, which is great for the neutral fans out there who will no doubt be tuning into this one.
I have to side with Real Madrid in this one and I think they will put the final nail in the coffin of Barcelona’s league title challenge. The win would be huge mentally for Madrid and would allow them to win the league title soon, giving them time to rest players ahead of their Champions League push. Should they do this you would have to fancy them to go on and win both trophies this season.
