The Premier League season kicks off this weekend and on Saturday, Liverpool travel to Watford for a tricky tie to open their season. When you look back to last season, Liverpool finished with nearly double the amount of points as Watford, although that doesn’t mean they are going to win today.
Liverpool have new players in their squad who will need time to settle down with them, and they also have the Phillipe Coutinho saga hanging over them, not ideal preparation for their opening game. That makes this trip to London difficult and with Watford looking defensively solid in pre-season, I can see them frustrating Liverpool in this one.
Liverpool have been both busy and impressive in pre-season, playing eight games and winning six of those. They drew the other two, with one of them leading to a penalty shootout loss, but in 90 minutes, they went through pre-season unbeaten.
Watford have only scored five goals in their six pre-season games this summer, hardly ideal, but they have also been defensively solid. They finished their schedule with two 0-0 draws and they head into the season looking like they can frustrate other clubs as they look to pick up as many points as possible.
Both clubs have new players that they will want to bed in during the first few games, which isn’t ideal for Liverpool, who will be aiming to win this one. Watford have the ability to frustrate as we have seen in pre-season and they have a great chance of doing that against Liverpool in this game.
With the lack of goals coming from Watford, I am leaning towards this being a frustrating day for Liverpool and the game finishing as a 0-0 draw. I am sure Watford would take that if you offered them it now.
