The England U21’s have come to life after a slow start to the European Championships, and they look set to light up the tournament by reaching the final on Tuesday.
They face Germany, who qualified as best runners-up in the first semi-final, which gets underway at 5 pm.
A 0-0 draw against Sweden to open the tournament wasn’t ideal for England, but since then they have gone from strength to strength. They were much better against Slovakia in game two, beating the Slovaks 2-1 and then were even better in their final game, beating hosts Poland 3-0. They have grown as the tournament has progressed and any further improvement would make them very difficult to beat.
Germany have qualified with six points as the best second placed team from the group stages. After winning their first two games well against the Czech Republic and Denmark, they lost their final group game 1-0 to Italy, which saw the Italians through as group winners. Germany played ok in the group stages but struggled against the stronger test of the Italians, they are going to have to step up their game to have a chance against England.
If this semi-final goes to form then England should be the ones heading for a place in Friday’s final. They have grown as this tournament has gone on and look a very strong outfit, capable of improving even further.
They are defensively solid, with the firepower to get past their old rivals Germany. The Germans struggled when they faced slightly better opposition in Italy and I can see them doing the same against England.
As we get to the crunch time in this tournament, I am not sure Germany are quite good enough and because of that, I am backing England to win and progress to the final.
